Klaipėda City Municipality

Klaipėda City Municipality is the official local government institution of Lithuania’s port city. Here it is presented as a public sector organisation bringing together municipal events, initiatives, public spaces and other information connected with life in Klaipėda. The history of local government in Klaipėda spans several centuries. The first written reference to the city’s town hall dates back to 1595. The present historic Town Hall building on Danė Street was constructed in the late 18th or early 19th century and originally belonged to Danish consul Lorenz Lork. In 1807–1808, when Klaipėda temporarily became the capital of Prussia, King Frederick William III of Prussia and Queen Louise lived in the building. The city magistrate acquired the building in 1846 and converted it into Klaipėda Town Hall. It was later reconstructed in the Neo-Renaissance style. Today, Klaipėda City Municipality continues the city’s long tradition of local government and contributes to the development of a modern, vibrant and welcoming Klaipėda.
