What to see in Klaipėda

Klaipėda is Lithuania's only seaport city: a castle was built at the mouth of the Danė in 1252, and the town received its city rights in 1257. Its museums tell the story of the castle, the sea and Lithuania Minor, half-timbered buildings survive in the Old Town, and a short ferry ride away in Smiltynė the nature of the Curonian Spit begins. Below are museums, parks and other places worth a visit, each marked on the map.

What to see in Klaipėda

The Old Town and the castle

Klaipėda's history began in 1252, when a castle was built at the mouth of the Danė. Its remains and its story are presented today by the Klaipėda Castle Museum. In the Old Town, walk from Theatre Square with the Ännchen von Tharau sculpture to the half-timbered warehouses and the Danė embankment.

The sea and the port

The city's maritime side is best seen at the Lithuanian Sea Museum, housed in the Kopgalis fortress in Smiltynė, which a ferry reaches from the Old Town. The sailing ship Meridianas is moored on the Danė, and the beaches and dunes begin at Melnragė and Giruliai.

Nature and parks

The Curonian Spit has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Forest and dune trails start in Smiltynė, and in the city itself the Martynas Mažvydas Sculpture Park, laid out on the site of a former cemetery, is worth a visit.

A route for one day

Start in the Old Town: Theatre Square, the Klaipėda Castle Museum and the Danė embankment with the sailing ship "Meridianas" are close together and easy to cover on foot. After lunch take the ferry from the Old Ferry Terminal to Smiltynė, where the Lithuanian Sea Museum and the forest and dune trails are. Back in town, end the day by the sea in Melnragė or Giruliai. Museum hours change with the season, so check them on the place page before you go.
