Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956) – German writer, theater critic, and director. The author began writing the play *Mother Courage and Her Children* in 1938, when fascist Germany was already openly preparing for war. The action takes place in the 17th century, during the Thirty Years’ War. The main character, Anna Firling, known as Mother Courage (French for “courage”), is a market vendor—that is, a seller of food and drink. The war is her main source of income. Mother Courage is also a mother who does not want her children to perish in the flames of war. However, motherhood and war are incompatible. Mother Courage loses her children...
Director Elmārs Seņkovs (Latvia) draws on Bertolt Brecht’s plot, giving the production a documentary feel and bringing it closer to today’s reality—while at the same time preserving the Brechtian spirit and the principles of his work.
“Strobe” lights are used during the performance.
