The fictional story of Marlene Dietrich and Leni Riefenstahl is a meeting of two of the 20th century’s most prominent figures, akin to a clash of worlds. The two women were very different both physically and spiritually, and their political views were completely incompatible. These differences are so obvious that it seems reconciliation and dialogue between these two figures are impossible. Just as dialogue between the two dominant world orders is impossible. But is it really impossible?
Maria Magdalena Marlena Dietrich (born in 1901 in Berlin, died in 1992 in Paris) was a German and American actress and singer whose career spanned nearly seven decades. She began her acting career in silent films (*The Little Napoleon*, 1923). She gained international fame for her role as Lola in Josef von Sternberg’s film *The Blue Angel* (1930). As her acting career waned (her last film was *Just a Gigolo*, 1978), she performed in various countries as a revue and cabaret singer during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1960, Dietrich was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Helena Berta Amalia Leni Riefenstahl (born 1902 in Berlin, died 2003 in Pocking) was a German film director and photographer, as well as an actress and dancer. She was one of the most famous filmmakers working in Nazi Germany. Her documentary films *Triumph of the Will* and *Olympia* made her an active propagandist for the Third Reich. After World War II, she was ousted from the film industry and became a photographer.
