Simply put, the play “Seniors” is a simple play about the extraordinary lives of ordinary retirees. The title itself clearly hints at what it’s about—old age. And who can say what old age really is? A comedy? A tragedy? Absurdity? Nonsense? Or perhaps the most important part of a person’s life? Apparently, there are all kinds of old ages, just as there are all kinds of people. For one person, it’s the golden years; for another, it’s hell; for a third… the third simply doesn’t understand what’s happened to them and continues to live as before: a twenty-year-old on the inside, and on the outside—a sleep-deprived young man. A fourth can’t wait for this nightmare to end; for a fifth, it’s never been as fun as it is now; for a sixth, it seems like everything is just beginning… “Judge a person by how he spends his final days.” There’s probably a lot of truth to this saying.
According to Rolandas Kazlas, director of the play *Senjorai* and one of its actors: “I’d like this play to give the average retiree more than a meager pension does. And even more so—to a future senior. Although the play’s characters are Italian, I’d like an older Lithuanian audience member who attends the play to say or quietly think to themselves: ‘This is about me,’ ‘I recognize a lot here,’ or ‘This is exactly the kind of play I needed right now.’
The cast is truly impressive: three friends from the same generation and the same class—Vitalija Mockevičiūtė, Evaldas Jaras, and Rolandas Kazlas—reunite after many years and, reminiscing about their youth, face the approaching old age on stage. No one knows exactly how old V. Mockevičiūtė is, but the combined age of the cast is quite substantial: 165 years! A full hundred more than the retirement age. So there should be plenty of experience to delve into the world of seniors and the joys and hardships of heroes in their twilight years.
We invite everyone who is elderly, who wants to grow old, and those who never seem to age to the play “Seniors”!
You can escape old age. Where? Even in the opposite direction from the flow of time: back to childhood…
