Description

With the start of the new season, audiences in Klaipėda will have a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a captivating musical fairy tale—“The Carnival of the Animals,” one of the most famous works by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. This colorful musical suite, composed at the end of the 19th century, has lost none of its charm to this day and is considered one of the most vivid and playful works of classical music for the whole family. Saint-Saëns was a true musical genius—he was already playing the piano at the age of five and later became one of the most important composers of the French Romantic era. He composed symphonies, operas, concertos, and chamber music, but it was *The Carnival of the Animals* that revealed his sense of humor, imagination, and ability to tell stories through sound alone. “The Carnival of the Animals” is a cycle of 14 short musical vignettes in which each animal has its own musical character: the proud and powerful lion, leaping kangaroos, slow-moving comical turtles, cheerful wild donkeys, a mysterious aquarium full of sparkling sounds, and, of course, the famous Swan—a sensitive, lyrical melody for cello, which has become one of the most famous themes in classical music worldwide. To capture the animals’ movements and moods, the composer masterfully employed a variety of instruments—from the heavy, marching sounds of the double basses to the light, fluttering notes of the piano or flute. The piece is also full of subtle humor: some sections gently parody other composers or even the academic world of music itself. Interestingly, Camille Saint-Saëns initially did not want *The Carnival of the Animals* to be performed in public—the composer considered the piece too playful for an artist of his stature. However, after his death, the suite quickly gained popularity and became one of the most frequently performed classical music programs in the world. Today, “The Carnival of the Animals” is performed not only in concert halls but also on theater stages, in ballet productions, in animation projects, and at educational events for children. The piece is often accompanied by narration, dancers, or visual projections that bring the music to life as a story.
