Description

The saxophone quartet “Arcis,” based in Munich, belongs to a new generation of chamber ensembles that combines the tradition of the classical concert with fresh ideas for stage presentation. The four musicians devote considerable attention not only to musical interpretation but also to the overall concert concept, from program selection to stage presentation. Thanks to their meticulously crafted performances, unexpected repertoire choices, and active international engagement, the quartet is now one of the most notable ensembles in Europe. In the program “Chronicles of Nightclubs,” the performers turn to music that captures the rhythm of the city, the influences of different cultures, and the stylistic shifts of the 20th century. In Frank Zappa’s work, music blends rock, jazz, and experimental ideas, while Ástor Piazzolla’s “tango nuevo”* tradition brought the energy and melancholy of Buenos Aires tango into concert halls. In their performances, the members of “Arcis” combine precise playing with theatricality, creating a lively connection with the audience. Their concerts remind us that chamber music does not necessarily mean a chamber-like atmosphere. It can be spirited, unpredictable, and relatable to today’s listener. * “Tango Nuevo” (Spanish for “New Tango”) is a progressive movement that emerged in the 1980s. It fundamentally transformed traditional Argentine tango by incorporating elements of contemporary dance, jazz, and classical music.
