France, early 20th century. Although Jeanne dreams of becoming a countess, in reality she is merely a butcher’s daughter in a small provincial town. Undeterred, thanks to her determination, self-confidence, and a bit of luck, she achieves her dream title, but as she navigates relationships with her loved ones and the tragic events of the past century, she realizes that there are far more important things in life. The story of one woman’s emancipation, creatively interwoven with 20th-century archival footage, weaves a political and social narrative about women. In historical films, we are used to seeing them only in the background, but in this film, women take center stage.
Bérenger Thouin
After studying film theory and later enrolling at the Louis Lumière School, Bérenger Thouin created several short films in which he used archival footage to explore his own cinematic language. “The Golden Age” is his first feature-length film; due to its use of archival footage, it was included in the Cannes Classics program and was also presented this year at the prestigious archival film festival “Il Ritrovato.”
