In a small coastal town, Asle and Gerda fall in love and have a son. However, their life together is overshadowed by trials—Asle is irresistibly drawn to the sea, while Gerda is left alone with their son more and more often. The love between these two people, balancing between desire and responsibility, dreams and reality, begins to be altered by distance. The harmony between silence and the film’s visual imagery, where somber glances are set against the majestic Norwegian landscape, becomes the director’s way of exploring the nuances of the couple’s changing relationship—nuances that are difficult to put into words. “My Love” is a mature screenplay written in 1988 by Poppe’s longtime friend, screenwriter, and Nobel Prize laureate Jon Fosse, which has awaited a directorial interpretation for nearly 40 years.
