Amanda catches her stepfather, Martin, having sex with her mother, even though she is convinced that, due to her dementia, her mother is no longer capable of consciously consenting to sex. But in such a situation, who is responsible for the woman’s decisions and her body? With whom is a person with dementia safest—with their child, their partner, or institutional caregivers? When social services intervene, a moral conflict erupts between Amanda—convincingly portrayed by Juliette Binoche—and Martin, in which the line between care and control becomes increasingly blurred. This poignant, complex drama, full of healthy realism and exploring intimacy and aging, was honored with the “Silver Bear” at the Berlinale.
