Famous pianist Lucy moves to the countryside with her family to help her husband, Philip, recover from burnout. There, the couple and their young son gradually find peace, until one morning the police knock on the door, arrest her husband, and confiscate his computer. Lucy learns the terrible truth and realizes that her child’s father is a completely different person than she had imagined. Caught between her instinct to protect her son and her lingering feelings for Philip, Lucy gradually tries to come to terms with her new reality. The idea for the film came to the director after she read a news article and later encountered a similar situation herself, when an actor from her previous film, *Corsage*, was accused of the same crime. “The Gentle Monster” focuses on women grappling with the emotional consequences of crimes committed by their family members.
