A quiet weekend by the sea. Karl and Emili, who have just had a baby, are throwing a party here to announce the newborn’s name to their loved ones. The day before, Karl learns that his sister has invited his mother to come as well. Although he cut ties with his mother long ago, his sister encourages Karl to give her a second chance—even though she suffered severe mental health crises in the past, she now manages her condition with medication. “The Guest” is a sort of sequel to “The Celebration,” the film that established “Dogma 95,” but this film also centers on the complex theme of mental illness alongside toxic family dynamics and past grievances. At the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the film won the Jury Prize and the award for Best Director.
