20th-century Northern Norway. Isaac, a loner, has nothing but the determination to build a life for himself. High up among the trees, he finds a patch of barren land where he wants to establish a farm. Although the land wears him down, it also gives him hope. Inger—a quiet and strong companion—comes to his aid. Despite their constant struggle against the harsh yet breathtakingly beautiful wilderness, everything in the couple’s life is clear and simple. However, the modernizing world and historical changes begin to knock on the recluses’ door, and the hardships of daily life and human frailties start to alter their shared existence. Knut Hamsun’s Nobel Prize-winning novel *Growth of the Soil* (1917), thanks to Hans Petter Moland’s masterful direction and an outstanding cast, has now become a universal and timely story about the connection between humans and nature, the weight of dramatic experiences, and the inner strength of the human spirit. *The Juices of the Earth* is Norway’s entry for the Oscars.
