Klaipėda Castle stands in the old town by the mouth of the Danė river, on Priešpilio street. The first castle rose here in the 13th century, and over the centuries it burned, was destroyed and rebuilt many times. The surviving walls and casemates house Klaipėdos pilies muziejus, a division of Mažosios Lietuvos istorijos muziejus. The Kurtina exposition traces the history of the castle and the town from the 13th to the 18th century, showing around five thousand archaeological finds together with interactive terminals and projections. The casemates of Prince Frederick and Prince Karl preserve authentic 16th-18th century spaces. The exposition Muziejus 39/45 covers events in the Klaipėda region during the Second World War. Guided tours and educational sessions are arranged for visitors. It suits travellers interested in history, families and school groups.
