Director Žilvinas Beniušis presents a modern, humor-filled interpretation of Molière’s classic comedy. For the Klaipėda audience, this comedy is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the new Marijampolė Drama Theater troupe, which radiates youthfulness and a love for the theater.
The plot of the play takes us into an absurd whirlwind of chaos: Sganarelle, a simple banana vendor, is passed off as a miracle-working doctor due to a ruse by his vengeful wife Martina and is brought to the home of the wealthy Geronte to treat his daughter Lucinde, who has suddenly lost her voice. With no understanding of medicine whatsoever, Sganarelle, resorting to absurd treatments, turns everyone’s heads and begins to successfully “cure” those who believe more in fine words than in reality.
In this production, Molière’s classic, interpreted through the lens of contemporary clowning and circus, transforms into an exhilarating, physically humorous theatrical experience, intended for those who long for quality laughter and incisive social irony. It’s a reminder that the theater is a place that invites us, if only for a moment, to “take off our masks” and laugh at our desire to appear better than we are. “I Am a Doctor” heals not with medicine, but with laughter and a reminder: let’s not take ourselves too seriously!
