“Power and Glory” is a breathtaking drama set in the 1930s in the Mexican state of Tabasco. In a country ravaged by civil war, radicals who have seized power enact a new law aimed at the complete destruction of the Catholic Church and its faithful. Soon, public executions-hanging people from trees or electric poles-become a gruesome part of everyday life.
At the center of the story is the country’s last remaining Catholic priest, known as the “Whiskey Priest.” He is far from a saint: frail, addicted to alcohol, the father of an illegitimate child, and constantly tormented by fear. Yet, despite being sentenced to death, he manages to escape from prison. Thus begins a tense and relentless manhunt for the priest…
The play offers a profound exploration of the themes of sanctity, betrayal, and humanity.
Drawing on motifs from Graham Greene’s famous novel *Power and Glory* (1940), the creators ask: in this world divided by ideologies, is dialogue between two mortal enemies still possible? The play invites us to reconsider the truth that the ideals of institutions and the sanctity of the individual are not one and the same. Today, as radical ideas are on the rise again in Europe, this work takes on particular relevance-it calls for the creation of space for dialogue and reveals the complex, multifaceted inner world of the human being.
Graham Greene (Henry Graham Greene) (1904-1991)-an English writer and journalist, considered one of the most prominent novelists of the 20th century. Having earned both literary acclaim and immense popularity, Greene established himself as a significant author early in his career, writing both serious novels with Catholic themes and thrillers (which he himself called “entertainment”). He was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature on several occasions. In his works, he explored the controversial moral and political issues of the modern world.
The novel *The Power and the Glory* won the Hawthornden Prize in 1941. Many of G. Grynas’s works have been adapted into films.
In 1926, G. Gryn converted to Catholicism. In his later years, he referred to himself as a “Catholic agnostic.” William Golding called Gryn “the great chronicler of human consciousness and anxiety in the 20th century” (according to Wikipedia).
