Franz Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” was composed as a short song for voice and piano, in which two characters meet—a frightened maiden and Death, who comforts her. A few years later, the composer revisited this song in a string quartet, transforming the simple dialogue into one of the most evocative musical narratives in his oeuvre about human fragility, fear, and acceptance. South Korean violinist Hyeyoon Park—an internationally acclaimed performer whose interpretations are praised for their technical mastery, sensitivity, and emotional depth—will lend a special sound to this program.
The mood of this piece will serve as the starting point for a program in which the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, together with H. Park, will offer different perspectives on the human experience. Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s “Concerto funèbre” for violin and string orchestra was composed against the backdrop of the political upheavals of the 20th century and became an expression of the composer’s inner stance. The work conveys not only anxiety and drama, but also a strong yearning for human dignity and hope.
H. Park is among the most prominent violinists of her generation, performing with the world’s most renowned orchestras and conductors. Her sensitive yet intense interpretation will reveal the diverse character of this program—the depth of Schubert’s Romanticism, the emotional tension in K. A. Hartmann’s music, and the rich nuances of the other works featured in the program.
