17th century, Germany. A soldier with a scarred face appears in a Protestant village. The newcomer presents the villagers with documents proving that he is the heir to a long-abandoned farm, and he settles there despite the residents’ suspicion. Over time, he wins their favor through his piety, courage, and hard work. However, good deeds alone are not enough; the locals pressure him to start a family and have children. The soldier hides a secret—he is a woman posing as a man. This dramatic yet ironic film is an ode to women in the history of humanity—a history steeped in patriarchy, blood, and mysterious silences. The phenomenal actress Sandra Hüller won the “Silver Bear” at the Berlin Film Festival for her leading role in this film.
